David (Ben) Swain - Government Officer of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands
David, known to most as Ben, is currently the Government Officer for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
David (Ben) Swain attended Slindon College between 1986 and 1991. After that, he attended Southampton Solent University where he studied Transport Management and Shipping Operations.
His early career saw him work for companies such as Channel Tunnel and King's Cross Station as Station Manager. However, his real passion for sailing and thirst for maritime knowledge led him to a professional career as a Yacht-master, where he has been Chief Officer and Captain of Tall Ship Pelican of London, Sea Cadets Commanding Officer TS John Jerwood and many other noteworthy roles.
In 2011, Ben founded the company Quaystage Training, an experiential learning provider that teaches young people and children about the marine environment, through sailing, diving and other water-based experiences.
He is currently on secondment from that role, as in March 2021 he was successfully appointed a Government Officer for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, in the South Atlantic Ocean. Part of this role involves overseeing the protection of the ecosystem, studying the biodiversity of the islands and their science facilities.
"Slindon College, and my time there, has always been very special to me and I know that the school has not only inspired me to achieve what I have done in my life to date."
